MY STORY
I was born profoundly deaf, not being diagnosed until I was fourteen months old. I then received my first Cochlear Implant at two and began a journey of growth and adaptation. With the help of speech therapy, interpreters, and supportive teachers, I developed my voice and communication skills. At thirteen, I chose to be bilaterally implanted, further enhancing my hearing experience. My first language was sign language, but after my implant was activated, I began relying more on spoken language.
Sports have always been a significant part of my life. I played baseball for eight years, rotating between pitcher, first base, and center field, before transitioning to basketball. During my freshman year at Tesoro High School, I joined the volleyball team, inspired by my mom, who was also a volleyball player. I enjoyed playing as an outside hitter, especially after transferring to University High School during my junior year, where I found a more inclusive environment. At the same time, I joined a Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) basketball club, reconnecting with old friends and forming new ones. With my height and experience playing basketball with my brother, we won the DHH Basketball Tournament Championship.
After graduating from University High School, I focused on academics, earning transferable credits that eventually led me to CSULB, where I was accepted into the prestigious BFA Graphic Design program. It has been an incredible honor to collaborate with talented students and professors at CSULB, where I’ve grown as a designer and artist.
Today, I’m embracing every opportunity and looking forward to where my path takes me next.
